Water Resources: We Contribute to Conservation - Petrobras

Water Resources

The availability of water in sufficient amounts and with the proper quality is essential to our operations. We use freshwater in various activities in all our business areas, such as for oil desalting, to generate steam, in the towers and in cooling systems, for firefighting, and for human consumption. Thus, almost all our activities generate wastewater (industrial, sanitary, and reclaimed water, among others). Thus, the "water resource" and "wastewater" topics are, in addition to cross-cutting, also of strategic relevance for our businesses' sustainability.

The water resource and wastewater management initiatives we carried out in 2017 are consolidated in the Water at Petrobras.

Our water resource management aims mainly at the constant pursuit of water use rationalization, which allows us both to ensure the supply we need for our activities and to contribute to water conservation in our facilities' influence areas. In this regard, we seek to adopt little intensive technologies in water use, to minimize water use in operations and processes, and to reuse and identify alternative supply sources, always keeping local water availability and the actions' technical and economic feasibility in mind. Insofar as the wastewater that is generated is concerned, we seek to minimize the amount of polluting substances we discharge, and to properly segregate, treat, and dispose of the currents, always aligned with the release standards and attentive to the capacity of the receiving bodies of water to assimilate the wastewater.

Important results

Get to know some of our results:

  • We have tripled our reuse volume in 10 years. In 2017, we reused 25.4 million m³, equivalent to 12.5% of our total demand for fresh water. This amount of water is sufficient, for example, to supply a city of 15,000 inhabitants for a year;

2018-03-14 _3_.png a) The source of the data used in the calculations was the 2017 Water Resource and Wastewater Inventory.
b) The volumes of condensate recovered in thermal cycles, of recirculated cooling water, and of reclaimed water reinjected for secondary and tertiary oil recovery purposes are not included.

  • In 2017, our score was above the average of the industrial sector and of the power sector in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP Water) water program. Another important achievement was our score in the Dow Jones World Sustainability Index. In the Water Related Risks indicator, we scored above the average of the companies that made up the index in 2017 (88 vs. 87 points), and above the industry average (88 vs. 34 points). The recognition by these evaluations shows that we have demonstrated and proved efficient environmental management actions, as well as the existence of robust processes to identify and mitigate water risks and strategies to capitalize water-related opportunities. These evaluations are made both within the scope of operating assets and in the company, showing the comprehensiveness of our environmental and water management strategy.

Biodiversity

We have developed several initiatives to biodiversity protection and environmental restoration actions in the planning of new projects and in our operations.
