Climate Change: Get to know our Performance Policies - Petrobras

Climate change and transitioning to low carbon

Mitigating climate change is one of the significant challenges that humanity urgently needs to face. To achieve that, coordinated and practical efforts by all actors are essential, as the scale and complexity of the energy transition will require time and significant investment.

We understand that promoting economic, social, and environmental development is a complex task, but we remain committed to contributing to a safe and just energy transition.

Our actions and results related to carbon management and climate change are based on three fundamental pillars: Carbon quantification and transparency; Resilience of our position in fossil facing the low-carbon transition; Strengthening our skills to create value in a low-carbon economy.

We have made remarkable progress in reducing emissions, with a 39% drop in absolute operational emissions between 2015 and 2022, supported by a 67% reduction in methane emissions during the same period, along with efficiency gains in operations. We have also achieved the best historical results in emissions intensity performance in upstream and downstream activities in 2022. Notably, greenhouse gas emissions intensity in exploration and production (E&P) activities alone has been reduced by 50% since 2009, and emissions intensity in refining activities has seen a 12% reduction between 2015 and 2022.

We have also excelled in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), reinjecting 10.6 million tons of CO2 in 2022, equivalent to approximately 25% of the industry's reinjection capacity, consolidating our leadership in CCUS.

Furthermore, we have set more ambitious targets for emissions reduction, methane emissions intensity, and CCUS projects. We have increased our total operational emissions reduction target to 30% by 2030 compared to 2015, and revised the target for reducing methane emissions intensity in upstream activities to 55% by 2025 compared to 2015. We have also set more ambitious targets for CCUS projects, with a readjustment to reinject 80 million tons of CO2 by 2025.

Our Climate Change Supplement aligns with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) guidelines and outlines our long-term ambition to ambition to neutralize emissions in operational activities under our control by 2050 and influence partners to achieve the same ambition in non-operated assets.
